CIRCUS MANIACS — PROCEDURES FOR DEALING WITH ACCIDENTS & MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

Firstly, DON'T PANIC

Don't Crowd Round, first check surroundings for potential hazards to self & casualty.

If a named First Aider or Teacher is present, ask them to deal with it.

If not an assistant teacher / supervisor / stage manager should take over.

A list of all current Circus Maniacs Staff who are qualified in First-Aid procedures is displayed on the Health & Safety noticeboard in the training space.

Location of First Aid Kits:

  1. Large Cabinet secured to the wall in the 'Blip' of the Circus Studio (South Wing East)
  2. Small portable Kit in Circus Maniacs' Office
  3. Small portable Kit in Circus Maniacs' Outreach Vehicle

IF SERIOUS CALL AN AMBULANCE

Give clear information:

  1. Re Casualty — Approx age, sex, status. (e.g. if heart stopped / if breathing / if unconscious / possible spinal injury / any serious bleeding etc..) & a simple statement of what happened.
  2. Location - e.g. South Wing East, The Kingswood Foundation Estate, Britannia Road (entrance is by the junction with Hillside Avenue), in Kingswood, Bristol.
  3. (a) Ask how long the emergency services are likely to be & report this information back.
    (b) Send someone out to the Kingswood Foundation Main Gate to look out for the ambulance & direct him or her to the casualty on arrival.

Emergency phones:

  1. Black Portable Landline Phone by Desk in the Circus Studio (South Wing East)
  2. Landline Phone - Circus Maniacs Office (upstairs - Office 8a).
  3. Most tutors carry a mobile phone.
  4. There is also an Emergency Landline Phone in the Gymnasium.

IF IN DOUBT GO TO CASUALTY

The Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) is the quickest hospital to get to.
A map of how to get there is displayed in the South Wing EAST & Circus Maniacs Office.
To call the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) for advice: 0117 - 923 0000

If less serious, take a teacher or student's car.
If driving, we advise 2 people to accompany the person needing to go to casualty - the driver, plus a second person to continue to monitor the casualty's condition - in case of delayed shock etc...

If no car is available take a taxi (make sure you get a receipt).

A teacher, teaching assistant / supervisor should go with the person who has the medical emergency, if possible.

Relevant teachers / Supervisors should inform the Course Directors immediately.

If casualty is under 18 years old, ALWAYS use emergency contact numbers for parents / guardians to inform them a.s.a.p. what has happened & what action has been taken.

All injuries / medical emergencies are to be recorded in the Accident Books / forms.

A copy of the above "Circus Maniacs' Procedures for dealing with Accidents and Emergencies" is displayed on the 'Health & Safety Noticeboard' in the Training Studio.
