N.I.C.E.

Circus Maniacs is currently involved with N.I.C.E. (Network of International Circus Exchange). Circus Maniacs is the only UK member, with partner circus schools from: Estonia, Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Latvia, France, Denmark, Romania, Finland, Sweden & Ceckoslavakia. This staff and student exchange programme has been running since 2005/2006 and is designed to benefit both our full-time students and our younger professionals.

european voluntary service

The European Voluntary Service is an EU initiative to increase opportunities for young people volunteering abroad. Participants are funded to experience non-formal learning in another country for a period of 2-12 months. Positions are not paid, but grants are available which cover the volunteer’s travel costs and living expenses, providing also a small monthly personal allowance. In 2008 Circus Maniacs was accredited as a hosting and sending organisation with the project Working to give young people new opportunities to experience circus and exchange skills. You can read more about our involvement with the EVS scheme on the EUROPA website.

At present we have a full complement of EVS volunteers, but if you would like to be considered for a placement after September ’09 then email a CV and motivation letter to info@circusmaniacs.com. More information on the programme and eligibility is available at the British Council Website.

We would welcome contact from former Circus Maniacs students and associates who might be interested in volunteering abroad through the service.

china exchange

In September 2008, Jackie Williams, Gareth Bailey and Tao Guo were invited to Taiyuan Circus School to spend two weeks observing the school and participating in workshops and teaching.

In the picture below Jackie and Gareth pose beside an ancient thousand-year-old Jinci Temple guard. Gareth rubs its cast-steel belly, hoping for luck.
